The Administration of Mureş Floodplain Natural Park promotes a series of ecological touristic activities, so that their impact on the environment should be very reduced. The most important touristic activities going on within the park are the following:
• trips on the river Mureş by canoes and kayaks which can be rented from the administration head office from Arad or from the tourist information points in Pecica and Cenad; • bicycle tours on certain routes: Ceala, Arad – Pecica across the forest, and Arad - Pecica – Sâmpetru German - Cenad which crosses the whole park from East to West; hiring bicycles to visit the park and to cover these routes is also possible at the administration head office in the Ceala Forest and at the tourist information points in Pecica and Cenad; • observing big mammals at large from Prundul Mare Watchtower, and birds from Beydin watchtower, specially built for this particular purpose in Prundul Mare Nature Reserve; there is a charge for the access to the watchtower built for observing large mammals, as there is the possibility of heating it, so it can be used in conditions of very low temperature; • guided visits within the whole park, on established routes which include the Water-lily Pond, floodplain stands, Monasteries Hodoş - Bodrog and Bezdin, or archaeological sites; Canoe trip The River Mureş is the main component of The Mureş Floodplain Natural Park landscape and it represents an attraction that few people can resist. As its varied, always changing and lively, the river Mureş seizes our thoughts and senses with each bend that we encounter. A trip by one of our canoes or kayaks will reveal to you a landscape you have never met before: flying birds that accompany you with their sounds and colours, trees that surround you tame and wild animals, etc. A range of wild isles will surprise you on your way and so you can admire their splendid vine creepers and curtains. This luxuriant vegetation has made some of Mureş canals seem true replicas of those in the Danube Delta. ![]() The charges range from about 2 euros/hour to about 15 euros/day and include renting a canoe that may hold 3 people (or two adults and two children), life-saving jackets, a container for storing food and a waterproof safety bag; if necessary, recovering the boats may also be included. With a total length of 12.7 km, the track start sat the end of Bodrog Street (entrance in Ceala Forest) and crosses parts of the forest, pastures, the bank of the river Mureş and an old river bed. And ends in the same place where it started. There are sign posts all along the track and there are many informative panels along it, aiming at drawing your attention on different tourist objectives, natural and historic values in the area. Thus, you can meet: old oaks, impressively large black poplars, The Ceala Fortess – remnant of a Turkish fortress, The Moltăreţ Pond, the swamp cypress stand – a inedited presence in Mureş Floodplain Natural Park.In the case you do not own bicycle or crash helmet we can help. Come and visit us at our head office on Visiting Centre Ceala. Andras Libus Watchtower A new opportunity is brought for nature lovers beginning with the year 2006, by the initiative of the Administration of Mureş Floodplain Natural Park of providing an ornithological watchtower at Prundul Mare Pond within the Prundul Mare Nature Reserve. As the access is free, anyone can watch the birds that nest, hunt and feed here. The watchtower is placed near Bezdin Monastery, on a flooded area, a real paradise for waterfowls, especially during floods. There can be watched birds such as: grey and night herons, little egrets, moorhens, coots, wild ducks, bee eaters, sand martins and a large number of birds of prey. Deer, rabbits, foxes or wild boars are a familiar presence in the area and anytime they can offer you a pleasant surprise by their lively appearance. The watchtower was named “Andras Libus” to honour the memory of the passionate ornithologist of the town of Pecica. Besides his important contribution brought to inventorying and monitoring the population of species in the Mureş Floodplain, he is also one of the people who promoted the idea of protecting this area. Bezdin Pond The Bezdin Marsh lies in the heart of Mureş Floodplain Natural Park, in its wildest area, represented by Prundul Mare Natural Reserve. Situated among willows, poplars, ashes and gorgeous oaks, most of the marsh is invaded by reed and rush, offering refuge to birds and reptiles that enjoy the dampness of the area. But the most spectacular part of the marsh is hidden to superficial glances; in order to discover it, you need to fallow a path that leads into the thick forest. It is here that the lively water lily bathes, in a clear water pool, visited by stags, wild boars and other beast that dwell in the forest. Here and there, on the shiny green plate – like leaves, undefiled flowers with tens of spreading petals fill us with wonder. On the leaves and among the lowers there are quaint insects and multicoloured dragon flies moving around as well as curious eyes of frogs. From the whole Arad County it is only here that the white water lilies display their splendour from May to September. This grain of luxuriant paradise is extremely frail, permanently threatened by an ephemeral existence. That is why it needs our whole appreciation and protection. Although the water surface of the Bezdin Marsh covers such a small area, less than half hectare, the special presence of the souls of all those who love beauty and nature.Prundul Mare watchtower The excellent location and facilities offered by our watchtower will provide ample opportunity to observe large mammals in their native habitat. It has a platform which is located on an old riverbed and reaches a height of four meters. Due to the tower’s thermal and phonic isolation, visitors can observe wild animals at large in conditions of maximum comfort, even in the most unfavourable weather conditions, without fear of startling the local wildlife. Depending on the season, you may see doe protecting their fauns, splendid stags crowned with wonderful adornments, families of wild boar or deer, and endless species of birdlife. Woodland creatures are unpredictable, and their simplicity and spontaneity will surely charm you. In winter time the tower watch may be warmed so that it should offer the highest comfort. The ideal time to observe large mammals is at sunset, and we therefore recommend a two-hour observation period in order to increase the opportunities of seeing them around the tower watch. During this time visitors may peruse our informative panel displays offering detailed information about the behaviour, diet, and way-of-life of our native fauna. Because it is placed in an old river bed of Mureş, a lot of common herons, little egrets and wild ducks feed here, after flooding; so this tower watch is ideal for an ornithological tourism. High tech binoculars will be placed at your disposal to enhance your viewing experience. |
