The Mureş River is a transponder river between Romania and Hungary. It is the biggest tributary of Tisza River, which is the main tributary of Danube River. The Mureş drainage area has a surface of 29,767 km2 and the length of the main river course is of 789 km, from which   28,310 km2 , respectively 761 km are included in the Romanian territory; thus it is the longest inner  river course and one of the most significant rivers of the Carpathian basin. The Mureş drains the Transylvanian basin in a westerly direction and it meets the Tisa River at Szeged. The main tributaries of the river are: Târnave, Arieş, Sebeş, Strei, Cugir and Cerna. The Mureş drainage basin includes all forms of relief: mountains (23%), hills and plateaux (25%), and plains (52%) with altitudes varying between 2,500 m in Retezat Mountain and under 100 m in the West Plain.

Within the park area, Mureş is 88 km long and 120 m wide on the average, the last part of it, from Nădlac to Cenad, being the border between Romania and Hungary. In time, it has undergone a series of natural changes, but, unfortunately, also many artificial ones determined by people.
The mean annual discharge of the Mureş River is of 184 m3/s. The maximum discharges of the river can reach over 2,000 m3/s (2,330 m3/s during the flood from 1975, for example). But the use of its waters is restricted by their quality and by the fact that the river here approaches the end of the drainage area, gathering pollutants which make it useful only for industry and agriculture. Still, in this sector the river Mureş has improved its quality parameters in the last years.
